Your birthday

In a five-element birth chart, your element is the one carried by the day you were born. That day stands for you, and the other elements stand for the people and things around you. There are five: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Read how the chart works.

What does each element mean?

Wood: growth, direction and beginnings

Green stones, such as prehnite and green aventurine.

Fire: warmth, presence and expression

Purple, pink and red stones, such as amethyst and rose quartz.

Earth: ground, trust and steadiness

Yellow and brown stones, such as tiger eye and golden rutilated quartz.

Metal: clarity, edges and resolve

White and clear stones, such as clear quartz and white quartz.

Water: flow, depth and intuition

Blue and black stones, such as lapis lazuli and aquamarine.

Is my element the same as the element I need?

Often not. Your element says who you are in the chart. The element you need comes from the whole chart, including the season you were born in. Take a sample birthday, July 21, 2003, at 6:42 pm in Chicago: the day element is Wood, and the chart needs Fire most. That’s why the bracelet for this birthday is built from Fire stones such as amethyst and flower quartz.

What about my birth year?

Many lists use the last digit of your birth year. That gives the element of your year, which is one part of your chart. If you were born before about February 4, use the year before, because the traditional year starts then. Some lists use Lunar New Year instead, so January and February birthdays can differ.

Common questions

Is this the element of my zodiac sign?

No. Western zodiac signs use four elements: fire, earth, air and water. The five-element chart is a separate system that reads your full birth date and time.

Can I have more than one element?

Your chart carries a mix of the five, and some charts have none of one. Your element is the one tied to your birth day, and the full chart shows how the mix adds up.

Which stones go with my element?

Each stone in the list above belongs to one element, so start there. If you want stones picked for you, go by the element your chart needs. Read about five elements bracelets.
