What amethyst is
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. The Gemological Institute of America describes its color as running from light lilac to deep royal purple, and notes that amethyst commonly shows color zoning: angular zones of darker and lighter purple inside one stone (GIA, Amethyst Description). Color zoning is a feature of the mineral; an individual strand can vary in shade and pattern. GIA rates amethyst 7 on the Mohs scale (GIA, Amethyst Care and Cleaning).

Amethyst or purple fluorite?
Both can be purple. Amethyst is quartz; fluorite is a different mineral. Color alone cannot tell you which one you are buying.

Needs more protection from rubbing against harder materials.
For everyday wear: take either bracelet off for lifting weights, gardening or work where beads can hit hard surfaces. Store strands separately. Mohs measures resistance to scratching, not to breaking. Fluorite has perfect cleavage—a tendency to split along particular planes—so hard knocks are a separate concern. Amethyst can chip too.
Choosing a fluorite bracelet
Compare the whole strand, then separate four decisions:
- Palette. Choose a mostly green look or a mixture of colors you enjoy. Ask what any rarity or grade claim is based on.
- Clarity and color bands. Compare several beads. Notice how light passes through them and how the bands repeat around the strand. One clear close-up cannot describe the whole bracelet.
- Surface and drill holes. Look at the actual strand in close-up, including the surface and drill holes. Check for chips, cracks or finish details that would change your choice.
- Size and price. Match bead diameter, bead count and fit information before comparing quotes. Check what each price includes.

Sunlight and heat
Strong, prolonged light and heat. GIA's care guide notes that some amethyst color "can fade with prolonged exposure to intense light," and advises against heat and steam cleaning (GIA). Avoid leaving a bracelet on a sunny windowsill or a hot car dashboard.

Natural violet. Not dyed or heated.
Our 12mm and 8mm amethyst strands are not dyed or heated. Compare their depth of purple and bead scale: a finer 8mm line or a fuller 12mm band of colour. Natural lighter and darker zones give individual beads their own character.
About the Uruguay name
Wearing it, and looking after it
Which wrist? Let the violet stand alone, or give it space beside a watch or sleeve. Choose the wrist that feels comfortable; putting it on can be a small reminder of the thought you want to keep clear that day.
Water, sleep, the gym. Take it off. GIA lists warm soapy water as safe for the stone itself, but a strung bracelet has an elastic cord, so a dry cloth is the routine.

Questions people ask before buying
12mm or 8mm?
Does “Uruguay amethyst” mean a higher quality grade?
The name alone does not establish a quality grade. GIA explains that amethyst value depends on quality rather than country of origin alone.
“Uruguay” is our supplier’s product label; we do not hold independent origin documentation for that strand. Compare the actual options, the appearance you prefer, bead size, fit and current price.
Is “AAA amethyst” a standard grade?
GIA says there is no universal AAA grading scale for amethyst. A seller may use its own grades, so ask what that seller’s label describes. It is not a substitute for independent identification or treatment information.
