What amethyst is
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. The Gemological Institute of America describes its color as running from light lilac to deep royal purple, and notes that amethyst commonly shows color zoning: angular zones of darker and lighter purple inside one stone (GIA, Amethyst Description). Color zoning is a feature of the mineral; an individual strand can vary in shade and pattern. GIA rates amethyst 7 on the Mohs scale (GIA, Amethyst Care and Cleaning).

Sunlight and heat
Strong, prolonged light and heat. GIA's care guide notes that some amethyst color "can fade with prolonged exposure to intense light," and advises against heat and steam cleaning (GIA). Avoid leaving a bracelet on a sunny windowsill or a hot car dashboard.
Sweat and sunscreen come up often. They dull the surface and sit in the cord; wipe with a soft dry cloth after a hot day. The longer answer, with what to do after a festival weekend, is in Amethyst care: sun, sweat and sunscreen.

What we know about treatment
“Uruguay” is the supplier’s product label. We do not currently hold independent documentation of origin.
Our beads are sold as natural mineral stone. Natural origin does not mean untreated. Stone Whisper confirms that the 12mm amethyst strand is not dyed or heated. We do not hold an independent laboratory report. A treatment record for the 8mm Uruguay-labelled strand is not currently available. A photograph cannot establish authenticity or treatment. If you receive a strand and have doubts, photograph it in daylight and email us; we will tell you what we know about that piece.
Wearing it, and looking after it
Which wrist? No rule we enforce. Wear it where it sits comfortably and where you will see it.
Water, sleep, the gym. Take it off. GIA lists warm soapy water as safe for the stone itself, but a strung bracelet has an elastic cord, so a dry cloth is the routine.
Storage. Flat, out of the sun, away from harder jewelry. Full routine on the care page.
